It started out on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2012. The
weather was a bit cold, rain pour down and grey clouds hang low on the sky. A
thunder struck, or at least that’s what he thought it did. A New Year ahead and
boy did he just got some news.
Living in a rainy season on this tropical island,
enough sun for everyone, but rain just came pouring in for days, making a
gloomy mood for everybody, him in particular. A failure of a man, he thinks of
himself, late twenties and nothing so far in his life. No house, no saving, no
steady relationship towards anything. But this is not a sad story, quite the
contrary actually. This is a lift-up stand-on-your-feet story, and that kind of
story, as how I tell it, starts from a low point in your life.
Of course it is not like that this particular guy is
in so much trouble that he has to struggle to get up and work 3 jobs for a
living. Not that kind of story. It’s just a story about a (regular) guy, on the
year 2012, where people values and interests, might have drifted a bit, from
what the 90’s people think or do. That is what on his mind. He has not been a
deep thinker and planner, a simple go-with-the flow, gregarious, detached
person. A bit weird actually, but who isn’t? He just has too many things in his
mind, the island, his hometown, siblings, friends, relatives, new friends, and
in between.
So, 1st Day of the year, time for changes,
and major changes it is. The previous year has been so-so, manage to screw up
most of it, crawl up to the end of the year with not much at hand, and to top
that, indecisive still, with his life. He’s not a bad looking person, and has
good personalities, although I can’t say he’s handsome or beautiful. He got his
perks on things, with some lack of confidence sometime, and never too sure of
himself to leap and grab his passion.
As cliché as it sounds, New Year has its moments to
make a person think and do stuffs they may have never done before, or decided
to change some failure from the past. Finding a one bedroom apartment was the
first thing he did. Circling around the housing area around the southern part
of the island, asking on every potential room for rent, and comparing the
prices and the facility, and also the access and distance from where he might
spend his time about. It took him three days to finally fine a small
unfurnished room with a average and affordable price, so that is when he moved
in.
